Speculation is growing that Oracle will either acquire or develop its own version of Linux within the next few months.

Goldman Sachs analyst Rick Sherlund took the possibility seriously enough to publish a 36-page note on the subject this week, according to The Street.com. Sherlund speculates that Oracle CEO Larry Ellison may clarify the company’s Linux strategy at a financial analyst meeting in July.

If Oracle makes a Linux move, the company will need VARs to compete effectively against Red Hat. Roughly 85 percent of Linux licenses in North America involve Red Hat, according to the open-source developer.
