It’s been more than a decade since Novell’s glory days in the early 1990s, when the company promoted training, partnerships and its Yes campaign to achieve server software dominance.

Sure, a lot has gone wrong at Novell over the past 10 years. The VAR Guy won’t rehash Novell’s missteps. Instead, he thinks he’s found the key to a Novell rebound: Linux training centers. Before you can generate customer wins, you’ve got to win the hearts and minds of VARs and IT managers.

Novell needs to make sure training centers are promoting SuSE Linux over Red Hat and Microsoft. To the company’s credit, Novell recently honored 25 top Linux training centers across the globe.

But don’t stop there, Novell. Those training centers need to promote SuSE Linux software stacks running a wealth of applications. As Microsoft taught Novell in the late 1990s, customers buy applications — not operating systems.
