The VAR Guy has learned what’s next from Cisco and Apple. But before he spills the beans, he wants to brag a bit. Critics called him crazy, but The VAR Guy predicted on January 12 that Cisco and Apple would settle the dispute over the iPhone name. He also described six reasons why the the duo needed to partner.

Just a few minutes ago, the two tech giants announced a settlement.Wonderful. So what’s next? Glad you asked.

Cisco plans to extend its “presence” technology to all major smart phones. This, according to one source, includes support for the iPhone—with or without Apple’s help. The work involves open standards and won’t require any special access or assistance from the smart phone makers.

Presence technology tracks your physical location and the types of devices you are currently using. Why route a phone call to your office phone when you’re only available on your cell phone?

In one potential scenario, Cisco’s presence technology will automatically route voice mail calls from your office to an email in-box on your iPhone or any other major smart phone, according to a trusted source in the know. You’ll be able to quickly scan phone message headers, opening and listening to only the phone messages that most concern you.

Where can you learn more about the “presence” strategy? The VAR Guy can’t reveal all of his secrets, but here’s a hint: Book a trip to Disney World for the first week of March. You might run into a lot of Cisco executives who just happen to be in town.
