If you read The VAR Guy regularly (doesn’t everyone?), you know that he isn’t exactly bullish on Novell. However, he has to give Novell some praise today for bolstering the company’s relationship with SAP.

SAP and Novell are now offering joint support to customers that run SAP applications on Novell’s SuSE Linux. The announcement comes at a critical time for Novell.

Some open source advocates question Novell’s relationship with Microsoft, especially since Microsoft now claims that some open source applications violate the company’s patents.

Meanwhile, Novell has to keep pace with Red Hat’s growing base of application providers. Just last week, more than a dozen open source companies announced that their applications are now available through the Red Hat Exchange, a new online store from Red Hat. Naturally, VARs that specialize in open source could view the Red Hat store as a one-stop shop for applications.

To keep pace, Novell has to strengthen its relationships with ISVs. And the SAP relationship is certainly a step in the right direction.

  1. Chris Day Says:

I think Novell needs to push their open work group suite of Zen, GroupWise, eDir, IDM, etc… I think the word is getting out they have linux, but the community isn’t aware of all the collaboration and products Novell has to work with both Linux and Windows.
