It was like a scene out of the original Gilligan’s Island pilot episode. Only this time The VAR Guy wasn’t laughing. He was driving a rented boat and taking a three-hour tour of Lake George, New York. That’s when a storm came blowing in. Lightning. Thunder. Heavy rain. Oh, and more lightning. The VAR Guy shouldn’t have been on the water. Even worse, he had his family with him. But there’s a happy ending.

During the storm, The VAR Guy spotted a small island in the middle of the lake. He later learned it’s a somewhat famous location called Three Brothers Island. Picture three small islands separated by only a few hundred feet. Each island is connected by a small covered bridge. Here are some photos of the island, including the dock that nearly collapsed when The VAR Guy plowed his rental boat into it.

The islands have been owned by the same family for roughly five generations. The owners — including employees from AMD and EMC, and the former art director of Inc. magazine — were kind enough to give The VAR Guy and his family shelter until the storm blew over.

Here’s a virtual thank you to the owners of Three Brothers Island.
