It has been about nine months since The VAR Guy checked in with D-Link. Back in January, Keith Karlsen, executive VP of North America channel operations, expressed bullish optimism about the New Year. But has D-Link managed to maintain its momentum amid fierce competition from Netgear, Linksys and other network hardware providers?

The VAR Guy plans to check in with Karlsen on Sept. 18. But apparently, D-Link continues to hum along. The firm recently landed on BusinessWeek’s list of top 100 IT companies. And solutions providers are also profiting from D-Link’s growing line of network hardware and storage solutions.

A case in point: NetStar Telecommunications, an authorized D-Link reseller in Houston, has designed a wireless switching solution for Pharm-Olam International Ltd., a contract research organization (CRO) that manages clinical trials of new drugs going on the market.

With offices in 22 countries, one of Pharm-Olam’s key objectives was to manage site-to-site communications under budget constraints without sacrificing quality of service and functionality. NetStar recommended a D-Link wireless switching solution that can stack up to 16 units in a stack and provide 768 Gigabit ports to serve as the core network backbone. The system supports VoIP phone handsets for global calling.

Frankly, the Pharm-Olam solution includes a range of additional D-Link products. But The VAR Guy wanted to cut to the chase here; he’s sleep deprived and has to get up early for business meetings. Although our resident blogger burns a lot of cycles covering Cisco, it’s clear that D-Link continues to carve out a niche for itself with VARs.
