It’s a question we get asked all the time: Who is the VAR Guy? Unfortunately, we don’t have a firm answer for you. The true identity of our blogger does, indeed, remain a mystery to even our staff.
As best we can tell, The VAR Guy has been around the IT industry and the channel for two decades or more. But he’s more than a geek. He started out as a print reporter, moved into marketing and consulting, and even spent some time at an ad agency. Some folks have even called him a Market Expert … though he shuns such praise.
During his free time, The VAR Guy listens to Jazz, bikes across big bridges, kayaks in New England, eats gumbo, roots for The Saints, and drinks Diet Coke by the gallon. When he was a kid he was a champion gymnast. By middle age he was carrying extra weight. Lately he’s been hitting the gym. He’s good with numbers but also quite creative and can even run all the logistics at a conference.
In some ways, The VAR Guy is a tortured soul. He owns two homes near Boston yet he’s a huge Yankees fan, traveling most Sundays during baseball season to “The Stadium” in the Bronx. He juggles a family, hangs out at Google, consults in Chicago and keeps offices in Austin and Amsterdam.
The VAR is seemingly everywhere, yet the only way to reach him is at thevarguy@gmail.com.
You now know as much as we know about The VAR Guy.

What kind of jazz does he like?
He used to like the Utah Jazz when John Stockton played.
But to truly get a feel for his favorite jazz, you’d need to attend a MuniWireless conference (www.muniwireless.com/events). The VAR Guy sometimes makes appearances at those events, and he comes equipped with his own theme music.
