Apple server fans and open source fanatics are about to engage in a group hug, The VAR Guy has learned. It will soon be easier to run Mac OS X and Linux side-by-side on Apple servers. How will this magic occur? The answer will surface at Macworld Expo January 14 in San Francisco. Here’s what to expect.
At the event, Parallels will launch Parallels Server for Mac, Windows and Linux. The VAR Guy broke news about this Linux-friendly version of Parallels way back in March 2007.
The current Parallels software has been a wildly popular option for running Mac OS X and Windows on Apple desktops and laptops. In fact, Parallels for the Mac surpassed 650,000 licenses sold in September.
Now Parallels is setting its sights on the server. Sources close to the company say Parallels Server for Mac, Windows and Linux will initially target departmental systems. That could be particularly good news for universities, which often run open source software on their Mac servers.
Also at Macworld, Parallels will offer a sneak peak at the next version of Parallels Desktop for the Mac, along with a look at “at the never-before-seen, industry-first technology” that will debut at the show. Hmmm. The VAR Guy doesn’t know what that clue means. But at least Parallels Server for Mac, Windows and Linux is finally here.
Sure, traditional PC companies like Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM continue to dominate the server space. But Parallels could give Apple and its solutions providers a timely lift in the server space.

Parallels is one of the key reasons why Apple has generated growing business sales. Our tech dept has macbooks with Mac OS and Windows XP. Parallels is the main reason we were able to do this. And we think Macs cost about 20% less than PCs to support each year.
I don’t think this qualifies as apple and linux “getting cozy”, not by a long shot. If apple were to ofer itunes for linux, and license quicktime to linux vendors, that would be getting cozy.
@ #3: How about Mac OS and Linux getting cozy? Apple may need to do more to support Linux and open source … but Parallels certainly is doing its part.
This is a title meant to attract attention, nothing more than that. Linux runs on Microsoft’s virtualization s/w too. Does that mean MS and Linux got Cozy?
Apples is trying hard to make iPod not work on Linux. Not iTunes/Safari for Linux. Sorry this post is a waste of people’s time.
Yes… Who does not remember the days of march 2008… ;-D You know, when The VAR Guy wrote about prallels…
I was playing with Parallels and Vmware fusion for some time on my iMac. For me Vmware is clear winner at least for now.
#4 Chandru: So, Parallels Server for Mac OS, Linux and Windows isn’t news? The wildly popular software that allowed Mac to gain momentum in Windows shows is now coming to servers. The VAR Guy doesn’t use Parallels (he doesn’t want Windows), but he imagines a great many businesses will give Parallels Server a look.
OS X on servers is a hassle. At my University, I’ve been busy recently migrating applications from OS X to Linux (that in some cases I had previously migrated the other way around). Many people were initially sold on the “ease” of use of OS X as a server, but grew quickly disenfranchised with the poor support from Apple and lack-lustre performance. Perhaps this Parallels software will help in this area by allowing OS X applications to be run on Linux.
Parallels server may be news. But it is far from Apple and Linux getting cozy.
Jessie…
Great post, I book marked it!…
