I'm a big fan and user of mysql. It saddens me that SUN is taking control because their past record when dealing with the open source model has been too unpredictable. Their own flavor of Linux which fell flat on it's butt. Their on again off again freeware x86 Solaris OS.
I think Mysql will slowly fade away from neglect and Postgress will fill the void.

MySQL is a good product, but not world class for certain tasks. It will be interesting to see what can be done here to make it even better.

the way i see it, sun has just bought a large amount of mindshare. MySQL is installed on 80%+ of web-server packages for small businesses in europe. if they can get the mysql logo to include the sun logo somewhere, sun will be back in the public consciousness (which is where sun needs to be). apple has done this by buying screentime. sun will do this by buying products. i know which one i think is the better business model.

After seeing how hasty MySQL was these last years (developing features like table partitioning, database clustering, foreign keys, triggers, stored procedures etc.), i have the feeling they really just targeted this sell.
I also have doubts about the scalability of these features, in comparison with PostgreSQL, for example.
By developing these features, they also forced PostgreSQL to speed up their developement (each minor version in 8 series has big improvements) so I think PgSQL is really ready to replace MySQL in LAMP configurations.

So, look forward to LAPP as standard configuration in the years to come.

Excellent move by Sun. The entrance of a technical capable and recently open minded supplier in the Enterprise Application environment is of great value for the IT world. The bussiness user-community will ultimately benefit from this through the hopefully? creation of simpler way of doing bussiness.

Brilliant move by Sun. The juxtaposition against Oracle's BEA acquisition is particularly unfortunate for Oracle. This changes the landscape quite a lot.

More on my blog:

Re.your questions #2 above: "The question becomes: Will the database (MySQL) or operating system (Red Hat Linux) sit in the middle of the open source universe?"

Aren't you missing the application server--e.g. JBoss--as a possible locus around which the open source software arena will coalesce?
