The VAR Guy is in beautiful Palm Desert, Calif., waiting for the venerable Demo conference to begin. A quick scan of the dozens of demo-ing companies shows an interesting range of businesses potentially of interest to the channel. Here are 10 companies and technologies worth watching…

… and their potential benefits to the channel.

  • KonoLive. Collaboration and information-sharing, linking social and business networks. Web 2.0 has in some cases simply created new data silos; it will be interesting to see if they can solve some of this.
  • 800 Genie. Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems are still in the stone age of customization; this may be the leap forward these systems need to kill voicemail hell once and for all.
  • Aternity Frontline Performance Intelligence Platform. Real-time performance analysis of every PC in the enterprise? Seems impossible – especially considering the tailoring needed to match the varying metrics of radically-different verticals.
  • BpDAM. Looks like a big-attachment email intermediary; some enterprises may need its security.
  • Acesis Point-of-Care. While the federal government has created substantial incentives for doctors to automate, it’s still a market dominated by Luddite users – and a crowd of competitors vying for those who do pop for software.
  • CatalystOffice. The VAR Guy has been waiting for a full-featured, completely-integrated set of online applications; is this it?
  • MoBeam. (Not to be confused with Las Vegas casino pioneer Moe Greene.) MoBeam makes the virtual barcode generator. Thousands of potential uses – but will the point-of-sale infrastructure want it?
  • iLeonardo. Looks like sharing “lifestream” data into notebooks, then sharing those with others. The challenge is making information easily findable.
  • PCMobilizr. Remote PC access from your cellphone. Previous attempts have stunk; hard to do this with no screen or keyboard penalties.
  • Kaazing Enterprise Edition. A scalable Java environment that doesn’t require plugins? The Web developer’s holy grail.

Those are the up-front standouts, at least from the initial snifftest. Later today: Let the demos begin.
