I moved from redhat and gentoo to Ubuntu server a year ago. I haven't been more happier. Ubuntu server is solid.

My ability to take ubuntu seriously as a server OS is largely dependent on how the upgrade from dapper to hardy goes. My experiences upgrading the desktop releases has been very negative, and it's caused me to go back to Debian stable on the servers.

Beyond that, they've got some gaps to fill in. Third party certifications, like Oracle or JBoss, would be a good start.

winning on the desktop and winning on the server are two entirely different challenges. i don't expect to see ubuntu much on the server for a few years. none of my customers are asking for it, and they know i'm a linux desktop advocate. about 10 percent of our customer desktops are now linux. and about 30 percent of their servers are linux. but those servers are mostly SUSE, with a smattering of Red Hat. i think the server market is too crowded for ubuntu to make an impact.
