Hmmm. Haile, you appear to be a piece of spam that's poking around The VAR Guy's site. We'd erase you immediately, but we're curious to see what you -- and your originator -- are up to.

Ben: If I had to describe Google Apps' three greatest traits, they would be (1) price, (2) document and spreadsheet version control and (3) easy collaboration.

But The VAR Guy still finds Google Apps' performance a bit slow on certain days, and working with online apps in real-time can be a hassle if Google's servers or your broadband connection aren't humming along.

I absolutely love Google Apps. We use it for a lot of things. What I think a lot of business-builders don't know is that the power of a spreadsheet can encompass so many applications -- and you can deploy it quickly and efficiently (and for free through Google). When we reach the point where we outgrow the spreadsheets, we start tinkering with our own with the insights needed to build an efficient system. Also, the revision control in many of Google Docs products keep us sane. It's good stuff.

Nice post. All very good points. There are a few sites that I’ve registered at in order to comment about this technology, but they are few and far between.

Google Apps is fantastic and now that Google is closing the connectivity gap, I will recommend that solution. However, spend the few extra dollars and get yourself a domain name so you can have proper business email addresses. Seeing an @gmail or @yahoo email address on a business card looks unprofessional. Google offers this now through Google Sites so you have no excuse.

As far as servers, the VAR Guy is once again correct. Suit the server to the software, not vice versa. The same applies for employee computers. If you have specialized software then let that determine your platform.

Don't bother with office space, unless you are phenomenally well financed. Chances are you don't need offices as a start-up. Start with a virtual office until revenues are stable.

WiFi is great but I will forever recommend wired networks in environments that require that extra level of security. Even with a secure WiFi network, a patient and persistent hacker will break your encryption. Then your customer records and financial data are at risk. With a wired network, the would-be hacker has a much harder job accessing your core systems.
