Cabreh: Dig a little deeper on the site and you’ll notice a page that describes Windows and Linux versions, with Linux version apparently slated for delivery in late July.

Maybe there will be Linux sometime this year, but right now on the MSI web site it’s Windows XP only.

We’ll see.

I agree that Novell made a mistake with the Microsoft deal, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. They are still producing great open source software and supporting the Linux community.

Another example of Novell/SuSE success is that Virtual Iron, a VMware-competitor, uses SLES as the base for their product.

Don’t forget there is also HP “mini-notebook” 2133 with preload SLED. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_2133_Mini-Note_PC . Hope to see more compatible laptops with Linux to come. Even without Novell preloads.

IGnatius: The VAR Guy thinks Novell made a mistake when it inked that Microsoft partnership. Portions of the open source community never forgave Novell. However, The VAR Guy doesn’t think Novell is in Microsoft’s pocket. And some CIOs have actually warmed up to Novell SuSE Linux because of the MSFT relationship.

You keep saying “SuSE” but you really ought to be saying “Microsoft Linux.” What’s good for Novell is bad for Linux. This is how Microsoft takes over the Linux community and destroys it from the inside. Is this what we really want?

Richard: Thanks for weighing in. The VAR Guy doesn’t want to suggest that Novell has super momentum — the company still has its challenges plus Red Hat is pretty darn strong on the server.

But, in the US’s “winner take all” society,” we sometimes forget that there’s room for multiple companies in a specific IT market.
