During this weak economy, lots of folks are writing articles describing how you can keep your job. The VAR Guy thinks it would be wiser for you to read articles on how to find a new job. Here’s why.

Fact is, there’s no secret to true job security. You can be a super-talented person who is loyal, hardworking and super-smart. But if a business’s financial numbers don’t add up, you could be out of a job.

Lots of folks — The VAR Guy included — have worked extra hard to hold onto a job and impress an employer. But what are you working to save? Your job or your employer’s business? What if you worked that hard to build equity for yourself — rather than your employer?

It’s great to have a strong work ethic. And we all need money to pay the bills. But hedge your bets. Network like crazy with all of your contacts. Re-invent your skill sets over and over again. And build your own personal brand.

Sure, companies work hard to hold onto their best talent during layoffs and staff cuts. But those cuts are never made with perfect precision. And the best talent may wind up on the street as well.

Instead of holding on, sometimes it’s far wiser to move on. Fast.
