I’m finding it easier every day to use Kubuntu/Ubuntu in my design work. The only minor glitch I’m currently encountering is trying to stick with GIMP where I am used to using Fireworks or Photoshop. Other than that, I’m very satisfied with my open source operating system. No more M/S hassles with glitches and what not.

I’ve found Ubuntu to cover nearly all of our needs here at my company. The operating system its self is brilliant. A big hurdle that we’ve had to overcome as a company was breaking our addiction to MS Publisher. We found a brilliant plugin for OpenOffice that allowed us to convert all of our Publisher documents into ODF files – and we had no issues with it, it converted even our most complex Publisher documents without a hitch!

Ubuntu provides us with a low cost, easy to maintain and safe to use environment. We’re very happy!

Yes, I agree. some like our small community’s local government use Open Office and it suits our needs. Edubuntu also serves our community’s day car center needs. We don’t use AutoCAD ors sage for making basic documents and printing them. Ubuntu works fine.

@Lee Ball: Each survey participant describes the types of applications they are running on Ubuntu. Many are running ERP, CRM and email alternatives to Microsoft’s server application suites.

We will publish some anecdotal information in the weeks ahead. Watch for a Works With U 1000 update at least once a week.

Longer term, watch for us to publish a complete report identifying key Ubuntu application trends across the Works With U 1000.

I’d be interested in the functions of these businesses that have moved to a Linux based setup. I can see how it would be easier for people not using Exchange, Outlook, complex Excel documents or Windows only apps like AutoCAD and Sage.

Two of our clients have switched completely to Ubuntu now( Nearly 100 Desktops). Their problem was viruses and frequent network issues due to Spamming. Now they thanked us for suggesting Ubuntu 8. The transition was smooth. User started using Ubuntu with 15 mins of training on what to use for email, office and browsing. Now users are discovering lot of new features which are useful for themselves. Thanks to Ubuntu . Great work.
