Untangle, which develops open source security solutions, has a rather interesting pitch for solutions providers and managed service providers. It involves a simple USB stick known as the Silver Bullet. Here’s the scoop.
The Silver Bullet USB stick comes pre-loaded with Untangle’s so-called “Re-Router Technology” software. The software allows VARs and MSPs to provide customers with gateway protection and filtering without adding new hardware to a customer’s network, Untangle claims.
Basically, the USB stick puts an Untangle security server on any Windows XP desktop, allowing VARs to demonstrate how to block spam, spyware and inappropriate Web sites (perhaps TheVARguy.com?). Untangle claims the softare protects all of the computers on the local network, and not just the host.
Sounds simple. And in these times of economic uncertainty, VARs and their customers want simple products that offer clear business benefits.
The VAR Guy doesn’t know if the USB stick actually works — no, he hasn’t tested it — but it sounds like a simple way for VARs to begin the security discussion with their customers.
