Hi everyboody,

this is a very lucky Halloween gift to me. My old but still good PIII/Usb 1.0 Thinkpad R31 now has been fixed with all the problems in the past years using linux on it (since breezy, formerly suse):

- The intel video driver now fully works (DRI, dual screen - not just cloned displays) - see: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14528
So now I can use a least the metacity compiz manager.

- Webcam (Logitech Notebook deluxe with gspca driver) works even with USB 1.0.

- Thinkpad buttons (with tpb) work again with new kernel

- PCMCIA network card (Netgear WPN511 - Atheros) works out of the box

- USB, LAN and mouse behaviour always had been buggy on this system. Seems to be gone ... everything runs smoothly now.

Here you can find an interesting list about common known bugs and how to fix them: http://www.blog.arun-prabha.com/2008/10/30/outstanding-issues-in-ubuntu-810/

Thanks all the people fixing bugs and helping developing the linux project ;)

I had the same problems with the USB creator, but that's really been the only real problem I have had. My Broadcom card works better now in Ubuntu than in Windows and that is great.

I've upgraded during the RC too. No breakage for me, so I was happy. It feels faster and snappier also.

I wasn't aware that you'd get double speeds with 2 connections... I thought it was a bug at first. But wow!

Whoops - I was wrong about it disappearing!
It is in the Menu: System>Administration>Create a USB startup disk. An in Synaptic package manager it is listed as USB-creator 0.1.10
sorry about that :)

I installed Ibex on a REALLY old Toshiba TECRA 8100 - only 256 Meg of memory, only a Pentium III (maybe 800 MHz). Can't believe how well it works - with a PCMCIA wireless card, too.
You said:
"I also tried the new USB stick installer option- a very nice tool indeed. Obviously if you have the chance to boot a machine from a USB stick, it’s light years ahead of running a live CD."

I, was REALLY excited about this one. However, it didn't work for me and the problems had already been addressed in the bugs and they had already moved from v 0.1.1 to 0.1.3.
I was watching for the update but instead of an update the application had disappeared from System>Administration. I hope it comes back fixed.
