It's my experience a lot of people don't even know what Windows is. So why should anybody worry about them knowing what Linux is? Sell them the system pre-installed and bank the cash.

Not all professionals have the mindset that "free software is bad". Frequently, it is the IT staff of larger firms that have that attitude. For small firms, the netbook is the appliance, and they don't care who made the OS - just that the thing as a whole works and is portable and reasonably functional. Most people do not attention to the OS on a blackberry or cell phone. These netbooks engender somewhat of the same attitude.

No, Christopher, as you say: "Perhaps I’ve misinterpreted the netbook article, or drawn unfair conclusions (admittedly, they’re all basically anecdotal) about the attitudes of “professionals” towards Linux." I don't think you have misinterpreted or drawn unfair conclusion.

However, I do feel you may have forgotten about the world economy? Companies can always borrow from the banks to pay for Microsoct office - or can they? Business people buying their own machines can always pay 300 $ or £ for Microsoft Office, instead of paying off their mortgage or feeding their families.
