The VAR Guy has a confession: He’s fried. Burned out. Exhausted. Blogging until all hours of the night can do that to you. But will our resident blogger ever retire? Can he trade in his keyboard for a recliner? Doubtful. Here’s why.
Retirement is when you replace your career with a bunch of hobbies (or death). But in The VAR Guy’s case, his career is his hobby:
- Reading and writing about technology
- Trying new technology
- Gossiping about the business of technology
- Speaking with hundreds of sources regularly about the future of technology
All of those items are fun… and they require The VAR Guy to crawl out of bed in the morning, walk 10 feet, and sit down in his home office. Not a bad life.
Still, blogging can be draining. And the even bigger drain is search engine optimization. It’s like exercising: You need to do it every day otherwise everything falls to pieces.
So, at least for a few minutes today The VAR Guy will contemplate retirement — until the next juicy tech rumor lands in his inbox, providing inspiration for his next blog entry of the day…

A change is as good as a rest. I am always frustrated when I meet folks who like things to stay the same, like keeping XP or the Wintel treadmill. I plan to retire in June so I can rave at the darkness full-time, after fishing and gardening in the warm seasons…
I am finishing my fifth career, teaching. Change is a constant in life, just stressful enough to keep us alive.
Robert: You are speaking The VAR Guy’s language. “Change” is why he loves high tech. It always changes. And Change is why The VAR Guy will have a hand in launching Nine Lives Media Inc.’s fourth media brand.
Our resident blogger wishes you well as you approach retirement. Keep the changes coming.
