Another promising piece of news from the open source IT channel: Opengear, which develops so-called console server systems, is growing its partner network and expects to generate record results this quarter. Here’s the scoop.
According to an Opengear press release, the company:
“experienced record order bookings in the fourth quarter of 2008 ending December 31, 2008 and has started off the first quarter of 2009 with what will be a record first quarter for the company despite the economic slowdown. Opengear attributes their success to an increase in new channel partners and customers, leading edge marketing initiatives, next generation product features and the best customer service and technical support in the console server market space.”
An Opengear spokeswoman says the company added 43 new customers and 10 new resellers in the last quarter of 2008. Full disclosure: Opengear’s press release also mentioned its position in The VAR Guy’s Open Source 50 report, which tracks the most promising open source channel programs. The VAR Guy enjoyed the plug.
Open or Closed Source?
Unlike some blogs — which evangelize open source as a superior business model to closed source — The VAR Guy continues to see value in both business models. And he also thinks blended approaches — such as virtualized open and closed source systems — will continue to gain momentum.
But for open source fans and critics alike, there’s another message worth nothing: The old myth that you can’t make money from open source is dead.
