I’ve attended my share of Linux installation festivals (installfests), where open source volunteers typically take donated Windows PCs and revive them as Linux systems. Now, the installfest craze seems to have found a new calling: The Asterisk IP PBX market, where open source meets telephony.
A case in point: The Atlanta Asterisk User Group held its third-annual Asterisk Install Fest and Conference on April 18. Attendees were allowed to bring a computer to the event, for volunteers to install and configure a working Asterisk system on it.
Channel Partners Participate
Yes, this was more than an Asterisk enthusiast event. Participants like Marc Fribush are building their businesses around Asterisk. Fribush’s company, Aretta Communications, specializes in hosted IP PBX solutions built atop Asterisk.
Curiously, Cbeyond — which claims to offer VoIP on a 100 percent Cisco network — was also involved in the installfest. That may reinforce a growing trend where Cisco channel partners and service providers are taking a close look at Asterisk.
I’ve got a few emails into the Atlanta Asterisk User Group for more info.
