Incognito, WhoCares?: The VAR Guy thinks Oracle will find a way to move forward with MySQL. But the Sun hardware business? Is Oracle really patient enough to nurse that back to health???

SUN already had a strong software group and hopefully Oracle will integrate more software offerings into their repertoire. But, there is still a lot of doubt as to what will happen with MySQL and other OpenSource offerings. Companies typically do not make money from "free" software, so I agree with Incognito.

Also, it's ironic that SUN just completed it's acquisition of MySQL a little over a year ago and then both the CEO, Marten Mickos, and the creator, Michael "Monty" Widenius, of MySQL quit just two months ago. I'm saddened such a prestigious company had to fall from grace so quickly, but they had their moment in the SUN (pun intended) and burned themselves up.

I'm also struggling to see how this is a good fit for Oracle. Sun/IBM made a lot of sense to me. My feeling is that Oracle will cherry pick what it wants and let the rest die. What could Oracle possibly need OpenOffice for or Virtualbox for that matter?

Roger That: Thank you. The VAR Guy is bracing for Sun and Oracle partners who disagree with him. But perhaps he'll exit, stage left (and catch his flight to Texas) before those partners read this blog entry...

VAR Guy, you pretty much nailed it with this one. Mr. Ellison knows Sun well but that doesn't mean this is going to go well.
