I just got an Acer AS1410-2285 11.6 "laptop" (netbook) with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. The OS seems nice, but I'm installing Win XP Pro. I prefer the no-frills classic XP that will run all the old programs I need for work.

Meh, the RC runs pretty good on my MacBook, but I would never pay for it - that is certain.

As for resources, My tricked out Unibody MacBook only scored a 4.9 out of 8 on the Windows 7 user experience program. So basically that means any laptop short of a Alienware super rig, will run a reduced version of what they claim is the full Windows 7 experience. Here we go again...

What I find interesting is the lack of mention of hardware requirements for the touted compatibility as it's not the same as for a standard Windows 7 system. The company I work for just agreed to be a Windows 7 guinea pig across the boards, as MS gave it for free (yes, for free), and XP mode grinds to a near halt at times with the software we MUST run. Due to the nature and sheer amount of custom and legacy software we deal with, the RC testing is already proving that it can't be done. Unless something is drastically changed, Windows 7 compatibility appears to be a marketing slogan, good for a small business that maybe needs to run a couple basic applications or so.

Lawrence: The VAR Guy doesn't question Microsoft's right to decide which features are appropriate for home vs. business. But our resident blogger does agree that the decisions sometimes come from Microsoft marketing folks and Microsoft finance folks who are weighing revenue goals instead of customer needs. Your point about XP mode for home users is ON THE MARK.

Home users, more than anyone, demand compatibility because they don't have IT support to help them sort out this stuff...

The set of Windows 7 “Editions” is an exercise in pure revenue-grabbing, nothing more and nothing less. Who is Microsoft to decide what features are appropriate for “home” use and which are not? What if a family has some old game that runs under Windows XP, but not under Vista or 7? Sorry, they don’t get access to “Windows XP Mode”—they’re just out of luck. The division between the “Editions” is decided by marketers who don’t want one option cannibalizing sales of another; it’s about satisfying Microsoft’s needs, not those of its customers.
