Imagine sipping a Pepsi in Coca Cola’s lobby. Or parking a Ford in GM’s executive parking lot. That’s the situation facing The VAR Guy today. In a few hours, he’ll be booting up an Apple MacBook Pro during interviews at Dell’s headquarters. Will “Hello” become a quick “Goodbye”? Hopefully not…
Fact is, The VAR Guy runs a range of systems — including a Dell PC equipped with Ubuntu 8.04. And in the mobile world, our resident blogger is looking at all the major PC suppliers, trying to select a netbook.
But during recent business travel, The VAR Guy has been all MacBook Pro, all the time. The reason: Our resident blogger is addicted to Apple’s iMovie (for quick video editing) and GarageBand (for podcast editing).
Apple’s digital editing applications are simple … but somehow powerful and elegant all at the same time. Show The VAR Guy similar applications in the Windows or Linux world, and he’ll consider letting go of his MacBook Pro.
In the meantime, our resident blogger looks forward to an engaging day of discussions at Dell.

This would be a great time to bring up the whole Dell v. Apple “Greenest Computer” feud.
StoragePipe: The VAR Guy had some great conversations at Dell this morning (blogs entries will follow soon). But our resident blogger didn’t bring up the Apple vs. Dell green debate — because opening a MacBook Pro on Dell’s campus was awkward enough.
@The VAR Guy
There are signs that PiTiVi on Linux is getting very very close to be a good basic video editor, e.g.>
“The point is PiTiVi is about 90% there (and perhaps 100% in git) to be able to support my needs for basic video editing in terms of stability and basic tools.”

Re GarageBand, I believe Jokosher is aiming for similar functionality. The Jokosher web site says >
“Jokosher is a simple and powerful multi-track studio. Jokosher provides a complete application for recording, editing, mixing and exporting audio, and has been specifically designed with usability in mind. The developers behind Jokosher have re-thought audio production at every level, and created something devilishly simple to use.”

I didn’t realize GarageBand could do duty as a sound-editing tool, I thought it was for music composition. Try Audacity for sound editing. Or Ardour, if you’re pro-audio-inclined.
Lawrence: Thanks for the tips. The VAR Guy will check out Audacity.
Hey Var Guy…how did it go? Did they show you the love that they share with their partners. They are a wonderful company to partner with…even for those “secret” or “I don’t bring it up in public” partners.
Cheers
Stuart Crawford
On MacBook now too…still love DELL though
Stuart: Great meetings. Lots of blog content on Dell’s partner program and Linux strategy to follow June 29 on TheVARguy.com and WorksWithU.com.
Enjoy that MacBook.
