Monlin might on the face of it be a threat to Ubuntu but it's not a threat to Canonical since Canonical are one of Intels main partners in developing Moblin. Which is a bit like eating your own tail. But that is how open source works.

So long as Canonical do well then Ubuntu should soldier on.

@Undacuvabrutha: First, great name (and great movie). Second, your point is well stated. Ultimately, The VAR Guy does think Moblin is a threat to Ubuntu because he who controls the user interface controls the brand.

FYI - Moblin is not a distro, and Intel has no plans to deliver it that way, instead they expect Linux distributions to put out their own Moblin flavors. Thus, saying it's a "threat" to Ubuntu on the Netbook is not correct, however it could possibly be interpreted as a threat to the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) product itself.

@ABC: Reader comments are welcome but please watch the language.

@Grappa: Yes, you've nailed it accept for one key consideration: The VAR Guy doesn't think Oracle will do much with Solaris/OpenSolaris in terms of R&D. It will be a nice, high-end niche offering.

Why invest more in Unix if the growth markets are Linux and Windows Server? Oracle would be wise to help accelerate the move from Solaris to Linux/Windows -- in order to maintain control of the database and application layers.

I was thinking:
Desktop: Ubuntu + OpenOffice
SMB Server: Ubuntu + MySQL (or Oracle)
Enterprise Server/Apps: openSolaris/Oracle/Java
High end Workstation: openSolaris
