Tech Data, the giant IT product distributor, has opened up another “Specialized Business Unit” (SBU) for the specific purpose of delivering health care technology. Here’s why.

Forecasts predict that government-funded health care providers and other modernization incentives via the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” (ARRA) show that investing in this vertical is a smart move, especially for 2010.

Tech Data notes:

  • Industry analyst Gartner claims the health care industry will spend roughly $81 billion on IT in 2010.
  • INPUT says the ARRA is going to inject 22.8 billion into heath care IT inside the next six years.
  • Plus, the Department of Veteran Affairs 2010 budget is looking for $3.3 billion to fund IT infrastructure.

Bottom line? Even if these stats are a little exaggerated or generous there’s cash flowing around health care, and a lot of it. That’s why Tech Data, Ingram Micro, Avnet and other distributors are touting the market.
