As to Linux newbie, Likewise helped me a lot. I wasn't able to configure Winbind and Samba. With Likewise it was a 5 min work. But is there a similar easy way for connecting my Linux desktops to win shares on MS Server?

Likewise Open is great since it is open source. There are other solutions out there as well that avoid some of the issues you mention, but then again, those aren't open source and do have a cost. But if you're looking for an enterprise solution you may want to consider those.

"And while Likewise can be especially useful in Active Directory environments that lack POSIX extensions, because it makes up user and group IDs on the fly rather than requiring them to be hard-coded somewhere, it still has the potential for colliding account information if you have enough users."

Actually the way Likewise generates its information is based on the user's SID hash (the Windows version of an UID/GID). You'll need over a million users in Active Directory before this can become a problem. Further more their enterprise product allows you to use the POSIX attributes in AD to store your UID/GID centrally.

Ran into the same issue that you mentioned in your article. Found a work-around. I just modified the /etc/likewise/lsassd.conf file:

assume-default-domain = yes

This seems to assume the default domain that I joined to and no longer needed me to use the domain\username stuff.
