Like the Mecca of Apple rumors, MacRumors.com yet again has an interesting round up of the latest rumblings on the ‘magic’ device. According to AppAdvice.com they have a very reliable source that’s told them that February 25th will be the start of iPad pre-orders. Then, 30 days after, you should have the shiny thing in your own hands. MacRumors says it’s bunk since their ‘reliable source’ also predicted an iPhone with an FM transmitter and an OLED screen.
But then there’s this thing about unannounced features. It’s already been shown that the iPad has a nice little space left for a potential webcam — the exact one in shape and size from the Macbooks — that has been intentionally left out of the iPad. Speculation on the reason for this is far reaching, as was the left out camera for the iPod touch. It’s pretty much a sure thing there wont be any webcam in the iPad come March.
But careful critics of the iPad would note that a few classic iPhone applications have been intentionally left out: There’s no Stocks, Weather, Voice Memo, Clock and Calculator apps. Kevin Fox, a GUI designer for Google had an interesting blog and highlighted these omissions. He thinks, since the iBooks app isn’t featured in any promotional pictures — it was nearly a last-minute addition because Apple wasn’t sure it was going to happen. And likewise, he states there may be more hasty additions. He says it best:
…what Stocks, Weather, Voice Memo, Clock, and Calculator have in common is that they’re all simple ‘minor’ apps that wouldn’t know what to do with 1024×768 if you gave it to them. They’re intended for quick reference, for quick ‘in and out’ tasks. In short, they’re multitasking apps. It’s clear that Apple believes this because with the exception of Voice Memo all these apps were OS X dashboard widgets before the iPhone ever existed. I would put forward that they’re going back to their rightful place.
Notably, Apple waited to just 9 days before the iPhone launch to note that YouTube support was a go. Will the iPad have Dashboard support a-la OS X? It could be fun and useful. Whispers from developers have also hinted at a few extra features in the new iPhone/Pad SDK, but weren’t allowed to talk about them. I think maybe Apple has another trick up it’s sleeve.
