CA Inc. is continuing its push into cloud services with the acquisition of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) solution provider 3Tera and their flagship product AppLogic. Here’s the deal.
The privately-held 3Tera, which opened for business in 2007, was one of the first to market with a solution for provisioning clouds and deploying applications to them by way of a graphical user interface (GUI) — and now CA can add that functionality to their growing portfolio of cloud services provided by other recent acquires NetQoS, Cassatt, and Oblicore.
Current 3Tera resellers, have no fear. In a letter to their channel partners, 3Tera confirmed that CA will continue to support AppLogic deployments and further develop the product.
Cloud application developers can upload their products to AppLogic’s catalog, where they can be deployed to anyone using 3Tera’s infrastructure solutions. CA’s press release claims that 3Tera serves over 80 enterprises and solutions providers, bringing the potential user base up to the thousands. Obviously, the acquisition stands to increase those numbers dramatically.
Financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed, but it’s safe to say CA has been opening its wallet to move deeper into the cloud. Still, it will be interesting to see if CA can piece together a true, cohesive cloud strategy that spans its vast product line and newly acquired offerings.
