EnterpriseDB, the self-described “Enterprise Postgres Company,” has announced a strategic partnership with data warehousing specialists Netezza Corporation. Under the terms of the deal, Netezza will resell EnterpriseDB’s Postgres Plus Advanced Server as Netezza Migrator (nzMigrator), an Oracle migration tool designed to operate within Netezza’s TwinFin appliance. Here’s the lowdown.
The goal, according to EnterpriseDB’s press release, is for nzMigrator to act as a proxy for front-end Oracle applications, protecting existing investments in Oracle technology and training. In the middle is the EnterpriseDB Oracle Compatibility Layer, which they say allows the development and deployment of Oracle-compatible applications and databases at a fraction of the cost.
“This partnership with EnterpriseDB gives Oracle customers a clear and painless migration strategy,” said Jim Baum, president and CEO of Netezza, in a prepared statement.
The VAR Guy has his eye on open-source database companies: with Oracle repositioning MySQL against Microsoft SQL Server, there’s been a run on other companies scrambling to claim Sun’s reseller partner base. And it sounds like EnterpriseDB and Netezza are joining that effort with a tool marketed at getting VARs out of Oracle’s ecosystem.
