VPNs have long been the standard for securely accessing data from outside the corporate wall. But can such technology be trusted to keep secure the data that lives in the virtual world? F5 says yes, with the latest version of its FirePass SSL VPN.

Version 7.0 has been designed to work in both physical and virtual formats, enabling companies to provide secure remote access for both types of platforms. Both FirePass and FirePass VE interoperate with F5’s FirePass client and the BIG-IP edge client, which provides advanced roaming, domain detection and automatic connection, so users can stay connected even when on the move.

Version 7.0 also includes enhanced endpoint security for Mac and Linux users, including antivirus and firewall capabilities. Users of 64-bit operating systems have added security with the Protected Workspace functionality, which reduces the risk of data loss, according to the company.

The updated management system provides advanced hardware identification, so IT managers can better identify and block out unauthorized devices trying to connect to the network. FirePass 7.0 also integrates with VMWare virtualization tools, providing a plethora of management functions that can be achieved in the virtual world.

As more companies look to cloud-based and virtual environments as a way to reduce operating and capital expenses, security is once again playing a major role in the decision-making process. Having a SSL VPN for the virtual world, and from a company known for building a better VPN, can make that transition a little easier.
