Apple is notorious for keeping secrets. But it sounds like Mac Pros and iMacs supplies are dwindling — which suggest Apple is preparing product updates. Here’s some speculation on where Apple is heading next.

When Apple product supplies dwindle, it usually means Apple is clearing inventory in preparation for a new product launch. In recent months,  the iPad and iPhone 4 have dominated Apple headlines. But in the days ahead, Apple buzz may shift back to the Macintosh.

In October (2009) Apple introduced the 21- and 27-inch iMac design with Intel’s Core i5 and i7 line of CPUs. Then, earlier this year in April 2010, Apple put Core i5′s and Core i7′s into the Macbook Pro line, too. The Mac Pro, however, hasn’t seen a decent upgrade since March of 2009. Long in the tooth, indeed.

So what does Apple have lined up? No one knows for sure, but rumor and speculation abound, hinting at new hexacore CPUs from Intel, along with USB 3.0 and an even faster upgrade to the FireWire 800 spec, perhaps 1600 or 3200.

What does this mean for you, the VAR or Apple aficionado? It means hold off on buying anything for now. Apple, traditionally, has done a spring and summer speed bump to their machines, and in the fall, often introduces new iPods or other little tweaks to software and hardware as well. With iOS 4 for the iPad coming out in the fall, and a delayed speed bump on the Macs, Apple may be planning for a bigger event in the fall than traditionally expected.

Also desperately in need for a boost? The MacBook Air, which hasn’t had a boost since June of 2009. Some speculate Apple is pushing a small, 11 inch form factor Macbook Air out the door. But this blogger thinks it’s unlikely. Still,  success of the iPad + Keyboard / Dock might have spurred interest in introducing a smaller form factor. If Apple releases it, it’ll be their smallest laptop to date, since the 12 inch PowerBook.
