MarkLogic, developer of the eponymous “award-winning” database, has announced that systems integrator Flatirons Solutions will be its first North American distributor. But it raises a question — does the market really need another database?

Even earlier in September, The VAR Guy wrote that the PostgreSQL-based EnterpriseDB attracted funding. Microsoft has SQL Server and, in the cloud, SQL Azure. Amazon Web Services has Amazon RDS. And we’re all familiar with established giants like Oracle, IBM DB2, SAP Sybase, MySQL … and the list goes on.

Finding a Niche

So where does MarkLogic fit in the picture? Under this week’s distribution agreement, Flatirons Solutions will be focusing its MarkLogic reseller efforts on the aerospace vertical, which is its apparent speciality. And MarkLogic says that what sets its solution apart from relational database services is its focus on unstructured data.

Moreover, MarkLogic seems to be in growth mode. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, MarkLogic has field offices in Austin, Boston, Frankfurt, London, New York, and Washington DC. The company is privately held with investors Sequoia Capital and Tenaya Capital, MarkLogic says.

Plus, quite a few big-name solutions providers now support MarkLogic. True believers include Cognizant, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro. Still, we wonder how many solutions providers will ultimately jump onto the MarkLogic bandwagon.
