The VAR Guy is amped up at the Intel Solutions Summit 2011. Things are getting bigger and better yet smaller and faster, and ISVs have seemingly never had a better time to strike while the iron is hot. A sea change is about to occur in the hardware space, and The VAR Guy believes the channel is poised to take full advantage of the new technologies.
With its advances in chip design, Intel is playing a big part in pushing super-fast processing into super-small devices. Here are the top three trends unveiled at the Intel Solutions Summit 2011 Conference Showcase:
- Speed: Get everything you ever wanted yesterday. Manufacturers such as Corsair are demoing super-fast DDR3 RAM, while Intel is showing off its latest SSD technologies coupled with its networking technology. Thunderbolt was absent, The VAR Guy noted, but an Intel employee happily noted that Intel was thrilled that Apple is an OEM for the new tech spec.
- Size: Acer, MSI, Biostar and many more manufacturers are making things smaller and better. Netbooks, micro-ATX motherboards, all-in-one computers and tablets were all in attendance, with attendees responding with a mixed bag of appreciation and amusement. Most tablets seemed half-baked, The VAR Guy observed, but all-in-one computers are more impressive and netbooks with new dual-core Atom CPUs and Core i3 CPUs have become a more viable solution as a daily-use computer.
- Distribution: Big names including Tech Data, Ingram Micro and Synnex discussed how they’re streamlining system builds and components for resellers through tools on their partner portals.
Trends notwithstanding, The VAR Guy wants to know how these new technologies fit into the channel. Todd Garrigues, Intel’s North America channel marketing manager, said it’s not just about the technologies but about the total solution. In fact, he said, Intel’s main focus for its entire ecosystem is solutions, solutions, solutions. It’s more than just a motherboard or a processor — it’s the enabling of vendors and ISVs to provide an overall solution.
The VAR Guy also heard much whispering about digital signage and smaller all-in-one units, but didn’t see much in the way of actual technology. But it’s still early.
