It’s Spring, so fire up the speculation engine because it’s iPhone 5 rumor time. With the device now being upgraded every summer, what can we expect for 2011? Well, there are a few things. Here’s what some are suggesting …

Tip of the hat goes to MacRumors for pulling together some of the details and this groovy picture of the alleged iPhone 5 frame. What’s interesting is the new frame has the same antenna positions as the Verizon iPhone, but also includes a SIM card slot, leading some to speculate the iPhone 5 will be dual-carrier capable for CDMA and GSM, since the chip used in the Verizon iPhone 4 is actually capable of achieving that right now.

That speculation aside, rumors on The Unofficial Apple Weblog say Apple will retain the iPhone 4 form factor but drop the glass back in favor of a metallic back. The iPhone 5 screen is said to be larger — 4 inches, to be precise — and basically takes up the entire front of the phone. There’s also a rumor that Apple is deciding whether to include near-field communication technology for e-payment. Finally, speculation abounds that Apple will push the release to Q3 to ease the pain of iPhone 4 buyers who just bought a new phone on Verizon.

Apple has surprised me so many times this year that I don’t know what to expect anymore, and that’s exciting. So here’s a safe bet that I’d put money on: The Dual-Core A5 CPU will make it into the iPhone 5.
