Vyatta, which bills itself as the open source alternative to Cisco Systems, is gaining traction in the cloud as cloud service providers continue to adopt its downloadable x86-based network operating system to build their own cloud. We’ve covered Vyatta’s progress on The VAR Guy for a while now, with Vyatta obtaining IPv6 certification in August of 2010. Here’s the scoop on its latest news:

In a nutshell, Vyatta Network OS has gained support among cloud providers, with L3 Networks and Cloud Central professing the most love. Network OS’s feature set apparently has proved itself from Vyatta’s existing appliances and has implications for channel partners working inside the virtualization and/or networking spaces.

Vyatta’s Network OS is essentially a software-based alternative to existing proprietary solutions. It also can be virtualized, thanks in part to Vyatta’s built-in ability to treat Layer 3 networking as a platform-independent application, enabling corporate security levels and compliance no matter how complex the network setup gets.

Network OS also includes:

  • Elasticity and scalability on demand
  • Physical-to-virtual migration without network redesign
  • Auto-provisioning for one button-click deployment and auto-configuration
  • Remote management with any third-party management system
  • Utility licensing through Vyatta VSPL licensing, which allows for pay-per-use billing options that fit to common cloud computing consumption models

Finally, Vyatta offers the Vyatta Service Provider Licensing Program, which allows partners to offer the very same Vyatta routing and network security functionality to customers but on a subscription basis. VARs and MSPs looking for an alternative might want to look at Vyatta’s Network OS, since virtualized appliances are becoming commonplace and often are preferred over standard networking equipment.
