Mitel is shaking up the unified communications space again, this time with a new offering for Android devices. It’s billed as a “bring your own device” solution that can allow Android users to access all of Mitel’s UC applications on their phones. Read on for the details …

Built on Mitel’s Freedom Architecture, the app enables users to access their voice, video, instant messaging and all their contacts on their Android device, all while using location-based technologies. For example: If a user has a GPS-enabled phone (and that GPS is on), the UC app can determine the user is out of the office and automatically set calls to go to voice mail or let certain calls ring through. Conversely, user whose GPS puts them at work can have their calls rerouted to a desktop phone or receive all calls through the app.

Mitel’s moves are in concert with its February 2011 promotion of vendor-agnostic channel accreditation for unified communications. Now, the company is (almost) going device-agnostic with Android support. Although it’s not available for iOS, Mitel’s release makes a small mention that the company is supporting Blackberry as well. Bottom line: Mitel wants users to have the flexibility of UC everywhere, with the optimal best-in-class options they can afford.

Mitel users can download the app now at the Google Marketplace. And while this isn’t a money-making value-add for partners, the mobile app does set Mitel’s technology apart from its competitors — which could make a difference to the end user. We’ll be on the lookout to see if Mitel releases an iOS version (though many iOS SIP clients already exist.)
