We’ve taken a look at SEPATON in past, detailing how its data solutions speed up private clouds. Now, the company is looking to speed enterprise branch office data and protection with its new SEPATON S2100-DS3 Series 1000 and 2000 systems. The VAR Guy knows it’s a mouthful, but if you’re a VAR working in the enterprise, this device may be the data cure all to your customer’s branch problems. Read on for The VAR Guy perspective …

The SEPATON S2100-DS3 Series 1000 and 2000 systems — or more simply, DS3 appliances — are part of SEPATON’s efforts to provide remote offices with the same level of data center protection traditionally found in corporate data centers. Apparently, there’s a real need for this kind of product, since SEPATON CEO Mike Thompson believes that a good 30 percent of remote corporate data is unprotected or protected by what he calls an “ad hoc” process.

The DS3 comes in 10TB to 20TB varieties, and its giant 2U pizza box chassis features two Fibre Channel ports and two 10GB Ethernet ports, and can deliver speeds up to 1500 MB/sec with certain DS3 configurations, according to SEPATON. Redundant power and SATA RAID come standard, as does SEPATON’s DeltaRemote replication optimization software (which can also provide remote alerts on data usage), data deduplication and compression integration, and the ability to create virtual tape-drive libraries for integration with legacy backup solutions.

The SEPATON S2100-DS3 series currently are in beta test mode, and will start at $110,000 for 10TB versions. Not exactly cheap, but we are talking about enterprise and not the SMB.

But The VAR Guy wonders: As nifty as this technology looks to be, can’t enterprise branch offices get the same level of data center protection by using cloud solutions instead? Of course, the answer would vary based on the amount of data a customer has. An on-site solution from SEPATON would likely be faster than any cloud-based backup protection solution could provide, but even 10TB of data is large. The VAR Guy will keep tabs as SEPATON speeds hit enterprises and vertical markets.
