Good news for VARs with client businesses using Oracle test and development servers, product databases and applications. In late July 2011 EMC Corp. announced several new EMC Proven Solutions to help clients move to a virtualized, cloud environment more quickly using VMware vSphere. Here are the details:

EMC will map out a strategy for Oracle database, application, test environment and development server users to achieve the following results:

  • Deploy Oracle test environment and development servers in seconds
  • Scale Oracle product databases and applications up or down, depending on a client’s needs, in minutes
  • Use an automated tiering structure to improve overall system performance and reduce cost
  • Provide an enhanced version of Oracle’s backup and recovery solution
  • Create and carry out the best possible virtualization strategy to virtualize Oracle environments
  • Replicate Oracle environments more quickly

“Many customers have reached the part in their journey to the cloud where the next step is to virtualize their mission-critical applications to gain even more OpEx and CapEx savings as well as greater IT efficiency on all levels,” said Prasas Rampalli, EMC senior vice president, in a prepared statement.  “With new EMC Proven Solutions and reference architectures, EMC is making virtualization of Oracle a cost-effective reality by enabling them to maximize existing Oracle software investments and create a foundation to optimize the use of the VMware platform across their Oracle landscape.”

The main solutions being used to achieve the above goals are the EMC Symmetrix VMAX and EMC VNX unified storage systems. Both will be used to reduce the time it takes to provision new servers and storage capacity. EMC will also deploy several replication products to virtualize the Oracle environments within 30 minutes and without any disruption to existing applications, according to EMC. Then VMware’s vSphere virtual machine kicks in. Together with Oracle’s Clone DB solution, the two will create new test and development servers “in seconds,” according to EMC. The end result? Increased speed and efficiency of Oracle databases and environments.

EMC has already deployed more flash capacity during the first half of 2011 using its unified storage systems and VMAX than it did throughout all of 2010. The company expects to reduce configuration and tuning time of Oracle environments by 80 percent, while delivering 44 percent more transactions per minute.
