Riding on the VMware VMworld wave, Parallels has launched a mobile iOS application in conjunction with a new version of Parallels Desktop for Mac to bring desktop virtualization to your iOS device. Any operating system virtualizable now can be accessed from your iOS device, as long as you’ve got an Internet connection. Tech specs and perspective to follow …
Parallels Desktop 7 for the Mac includes a little client that allows you to connect remotely to your VM library through the new Parallels Mobile application. Just set up a user name and password on your Mac, and enter that login information on your iPad or iPhone. Suddenly, your desktop is on your iPad. The technology isn’t new — remote desktop applications have been around for a long time. But Parallels has made it special because it enables audio, video and Flash to work over the mobile client, in addition to accessing files and programs on the VM and the Mac itself. As long as Parallels can virtualize it, you can view it on your iPad. That means you can use Ubuntu on your iPad, if you’d like. Even Google Chrome OS can be virtualized and used on the iPad, according to Parallels. Now you can find out of a Chrome OS tablet is right for you. Hooray!
How much will this setup cost? Parallels Mobile normally costs $20 but is currently promotionally priced at $4.99 during the Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac release. Anyone using a previous version of Parallels can get the upgrade for free, but new users will have to pay $80 for the software. If you’re a VAR who’s often mobile and needs some virtualization-based productivity, this could be an ideal solution for you. If you’re on the fence about it, you might want to consider just buying the app for $4.99 before it pops back up to $20 — it won’t go bad while you think about Parallels Desktop 7.
