That was fast. Just last week we covered how Android Ice Cream Sandwich was likely slated for an Oct. 11, 2011, release, according to the YouTube Android Developer account. Now Samsung has released an official statement telling us to hold our horses. Android dessert is coming soon, but not quite yet …
According to Samsung’s global blog, the ICS launch event has officially been postponed because …
“Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at the 2011 CTIA fall event. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.”
Hmm. What’s all this about? It’s hard to say, but if I had to guess, it’s about the software, and I blame it on the Kindle Fire. With the holiday season around the corner, there’s going to be a lot of competition in the mobile space, and I see two big winners: Amazon and Apple. Google probably doesn’t want to take any chances, and so its flagship phone with Samsung — the Nexus Prime — needs to have all the fit, finish and polish that makes Android 4.0 feel like a departure from past Android iterations. Amazon’s special Android version on the Kindle Fire along with iOS and even Windows Phone 7 on Nokia devices are all upping the ante in the mobile world, and so too, must Google.
But what do you think Google’s reason for the delay is? Chime in the comments and let us know where you think the future of Android is headed.

Actually, I’m pretty sure it’s in regards to the passing of Steve Jobs, out of respect. Not so much about the Kindle.. but that’s my opinion.
Out of respect for Jobs? In this industry? It’s a business and IMHO (and no disrespect to Jobs) but Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead. It’s game on now.
Actually, it is because of Steve Jobs. See the following quote from http://www.itproportal.com/2011/10/08/google-samsung-delay-product-launch-following-steve-jobs-death/ , citing the Times of India:
“”We decided it was not the right time to announce a new product while the world was expressing tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing,” Kim Titus, the spokesperson for Samsung, said in a telephone interview, Times of India reports.
“The industry has never lost such an iconic figure. Obviously we were well down the path but decided this was the right thing to do,” he added.”
RadRich, wow, that was harsh and inappropriate. Steve Jobs may have been a bit uncontroversial. Passionate and not the easiest to deal with at times. But the man employed a lot of people, including people in my family and friends. He also gave us a technology that changed the world. His lock down on the OS was to protect against malware. His lock down on the music anti-piracy was at the request of the record companies. Did you know that the iTunes store was thought up to enhance the ipod? It was not thought of some money-making scheme initially. It was just a brilliant plan to bring music to people in a way that the record companies could deal with. (Source, a Linux compiler engr. that worked for Appple 10+ years, one I grew up with and I trust very much his judgement). Before you insult Steve Jobs, please try to take a step back and look at the whole picture. thanketh.
