ShoreTel recognizes one glaring byproduct of the consumerization of IT and the bring your own device (BYOD) movement is the need by companies to support a mishmash of devices and OSes. That’s why the company has upgraded ShoreTel Mobility to support the three major mobility platforms and an expanded number of devices.

“Mobility is a feature companies often think they have but it turns out they often have one or two features with their current system that enable some form of mobility but not a whole solution,” said Pejman Roshan, vice president of mobility at ShoreTel. “We spend a lot of time educating customers about what we do and what our feature set is really about.”

ShoreTel’s acquisition of Agito Networks in October 2010 provided the technology to enable ShoreTel’s enterprise employees to use any device in any location on any network as their office phone line. The solution initially support Apple iOS devices as well as some RIM BlackBerry devices, Nokia phones and Windows Mobile phones. This upgrade now supports the BlackBerry OS 6 platform, including the Blackberry Torch 9800, Bold 9700 and Bold 9780 for full functionality, while offering telephony interface integration with Android OS 2.1+ offerings including the Motorola ATRIX 4G, Droid X2 and Droid; HTC Droid Incredible 2, Thunderbolt 4G and Inspire 4G; Samsung Galaxy S, Droid Charge 4G, Infuse 4G, Epic 4G and Galaxy Tablet; and the Cisco Cius.

Although the solution currently only supports voice on the Android, Roshan said ShoreTel plans to expand the Android OS support to include other UC features such as presence by early 2012.

“The core product offering is the same,” Roshan said. “But now we integrate and support a larger range of mobile devices. Our target is to support the broadest range of mobile devices,” which also will include Windows Phone 7 as adoption of that OS reaches critical mass, he said.

General availability of the ShoreTel Mobility upgrade is slated to November, which may not be coming soon enough for channel partners whose customers are screaming for a heterogenous solution to address all the employee devices flooding the network.
