These days, mobile device management is the hottest thing since melted butter — remember Symantec’s recently announced DLP for tablets offering? — and now CompTIA has launched new “educational offerings” to help IT channel partners learn about the ways iPads and Android devices can co-exist in the corporate workplace. CompTIA has created training programs specifically geared for mobile device management in the enterprise. According to CompTIA, those programs aren’t just general practices scooped up and mashed together into one mass of MDM goo; CompTIA has brought in “all sectors of the mobile universe” to weigh in, advise and provide training content. Those players include (unnamed) network carriers, solution providers, application developers and more. The very same advisory board also will offer business advice in attacking these markets.
So what topics can partners expect to encounter should they journey with CompTIA? Along with the standard gamut of one training guides, CompTIA promises “live workshops” and resources for specific industries including health care, cloud and security. CompTIA also launched a research study on mobility, telecommuting and remote workforce trends with the goal of teasing out the “challenges” that mobility brings to the workplace. CompTIA plans to release the result of the study in the next few months, and our resident blogger hopes the information will help guide partners in their mobile device management endeavors.
CompTIA’s new offerings will be helpful, for sure. But there are also some vendor-specific solutions out there for partners more comfortable with MDM, including Dell KACE management techniques and Symantec’s DLP for tablets.

I feel that this is a good move again by Comptia. Mobile technology is getting bigger and bigger all the time in hardware and software technology so the more knowledge you know about it the better skills you will have to cope with it.
Barry: Yes, CompTIA has been making progress in the past year or two — polishing its certifications and pushing beyond classic efforts (A+, Network+, etc.) to focus on emerging market opportunities. But we’ll be watching to see if CompTIA’s mobile device management efforts truly deliver value to VARs and MSPs.
