Red Hat is launching deeper into the cloud with Virtustream, a partnership designed to push Red Hat into the cloud in a cost-effective way. If getting Red Hat on-demand sounds like your cup of tea, The VAR Guy is pouring. Read on.
First, a refresher on Virtustream. Via Virtustream’s xStream platform, a variety of cloud-based solutions, including storage, virtual servers, networking needs and application deployment, can be ‘streamed’ down to customers. Virtustream also gets its ‘stream’ name from the fact that customers are offered a streamlined way to order SLAs, based around a quantity of “CPU, memory, network and storage I/O resources.” The VAR Guy translates this to mean everything is metered and paid for based on exclusively on how much (or little) you use.
The relationship between Red Hat and Virtustream is actually quite simple: Virtustream has partnered with Red Hat to become a Premier Certified Cloud Provider. Now, if you’re using Virtustream’s products, you can simply ask the company to load up Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization via its xStream cloud platform. Red Hat gets a win, because it’s product proliferation, and Virtustream gets a win, because it can provide its customers with a more “scalable and flexible cloud infrastructure.” Hooray.
Red Hat Cloud Business Unit (CBU) VP Scott Crenshaw noted Virtustream will “… deliver more choice in virtualization and cloud computing to enterprises with solutions such as Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.” As data center virtualization and cloud transitional needs become more prevalent, ensuring there’s a gateway to the cloud for everyone is definitely key. Virtustream could become a key player in pay-as-you-go cloud services for the channel and customers alike.
