Apple is making some ambitious data center moves, The VAR Guy thinks,  as the company has brought into its fold former Yahoo! data center master Scott Noteboom. The reason for his hire was not made public, but The VAR Guy can speculate, can’t he?

The tip of the hat goes to Gigaom, which noticed the status change on Notebloom’s LinkedIn profile. Currently, Noteboom is listed as a “distinguished gentleman” at Apple, and before that, his listed job was “as Yahoo!’s Head of Global Data Center Infrastructure.” He is credited for expansion and growth of Yahoo!’s data centers, in addition to making them greener.

With Apple’s first North Carolina data center built, and a second one nearly complete, Apple must have some incredibly ambitious plans for iCloud and whatever other data center needs exist between iTunes and beyond.

What could be in that ‘beyond’ section? With increasing confirmations about a rumored Apple television set, The VAR Guy guesses Apple may be taking on Netflix or similar movie streaming services. Apple clearly wants to be the arbiter of all things media, which is especially apparent with the iTunes match service Apple launched in conjunction with iCloud. Could Apple be building that second data center as a repository for all the digital media the world can provide? And more importantly, will Noteboom be the guy to deliver?

Our resident blogger thinks we’ll have a much clearer picture of where Apple is headed in a year’s time, but he wouldn’t be surprised if Apple takes on all the media streaming outlets of the world and all the cable companies. With Apple’s record-breaking figures in Q4, The VAR Guy thinks it would be wise to underestimate Apple’s power.
