Riverbed Technology is parlaying the technology it gained from its July 2011 acquisitions of Zeus Technology and Aptimize into a line of optimization hardware designed to address asymmetric web traffic.

The Stingray family of appliances are aimed at enterprises considering or already using private or public clouds but are feeling the constraints of slow networks, applications or content, said Naveen Prabhu, senior product marketing manager at Riverbed.

If you look at how application performance is affected, it comes down to the network, the application and the content,” he said. “Our technology answers those individual questions.”

Included in the Stingray family:

  • Stingray Traffic Manager – a high-performance virtual ADC developed by Zeus and designed to accelerate enterprise applications hosted on servers as well as provide advanced scripting and enterprise-level functionality. It is available as either an on-premise or subscription-based model;
  • Stingray Aptimizer – a web content optimization appliance originally developed by Aptimize that reduces page load times and bandwidth by transforming the content to accelerate website performance; and
  • Stingray Web Application Firewall – just what the name implies, it protects web applications against threats and helps companies meet security compliance requirements. Stingray Web Application Firewall is available as either a standalone offering or as part of the Stingray Traffic Manager.

Taken together, the new offerings represent a way for partners to help their customers manage asymmetric traffic — something Riverbed until now has not addressed. Its Steelhead family of appliances address symmetric traffic through its appliance-at-both-ends setup, but it deals specifically with network issues, Prabhu said.

“These new products play well into asymmetric use cases – there’s not an appliance at each end,” he said. With the cloud, enterprises need the ability to scale, which is where these new products come in. We are adapting and trying to be as agnostic as possible to enable and encourage the move to cloud infrastructures.”

And for channel, he said, it’s about enabling the customer to make the right choices in building out their cloud infrastructure.

“Being a channel-driven company, once customers decide to go a certain direction, we want to help our channel partner to help them get there,” Prabhu added. “We can allow the customer to choose the best technology that meets their needs.”

The Stingray family line is available now at various price points depending on the size and functionality of the appliance.
