Long has been the promise of virtualization to bring desktops anywhere and everywhere, no matter what the platform of access. Long also has been the promise of the cloud to bring data anywhere and everywhere. Now CloudOn promises to bring both of those things, completely free, on your iPad, via Microsoft Office. Here’s the scoop …

If you haven’t heard of CloudOn, don’t be surprised. It hasn’t exactly been on the map. But according to VentureBeat, the company was created by former Cisco Systems employees and more than $7 million in funding. For a while, its focus was a secret, but now, it’s out of the box. CloudOn has built a virtualization platform specifically designed to run Microsoft Office and nothing else. Download its free iPad app, log on, link to your Dropbox account for saving files, and work away. Full versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint are at your disposal.

And yes, it sounds almost too good to be true, and yes, it is, just a little bit. Unfortunately, due to the crazy demand for the product, CloudOn has had to close down access for new users. Considering the application was on the market for one day before the company hit the brakes, CloudOn either experienced a huge surge in demand or was using some poorly built servers. My guess is the former.

The channel implications aren’t too far-reaching, but for small businesses or cash-strapped VARs, CloudOn could be the simple and easy solution that powers your productivity during the day or on the go. Download the free app here, or check out CloudOn’s website to sign up and be informed when its “workspace” is open to new users. I’ve signed up and plan on providing full review as soon as it’s ready.
