Avaya is focusing on the evolution of video collaboration by launching the Avaya Flare Communicator for the iPad. Video calls are nothing new for the iPad, but unified communications (UC) integration with Apple products is a task UC companies are taking more seriously. Here’s what Avaya is bringing to the tablet table …

Avaya is calling the Flare Communicator for iPad an “enterprise-class voice, instant messaging [and] presence with e-mail integration” suite, uniquely designed for use on the iPad. Avaya has also designed Flare Communicator to work on 3G connections, too, so mobile users can collaborate even when they’re on the go. The Flare Communicator boasts an impressive feature list, including dual-call management, iOS multitasking while maintaining communication connections and full access to searching a corporate directory.

Behind the scenes, Flare Communicator is powered by the Avaya Aura unified communications architecture, and Avaya plans to use the extensible technology to bring Flare Communicator “to additional consumer devices” later in 2012, according to the company. Ideally, this software helps Avaya and its resellers encourage a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) atmosphere.

Right now, Flare Communicator is free to download on the iTunes store, but there is a small caveat: Avaya is offering up to 50 Avaya Aura client access licenses free of charge from Jan. 24 through April 30 for companies using Avaya Aura 6.1 or later. Sounds like larger-scale deployment of iPads with Flare Communicator may require licensing agreements on a per-connection or per-user basis.

If you’re following the mobile UC beat, be sure to also check out Polycom’s mobile UC moves with RealPresence and Motorola. This year should be an expanding year for mobile UC solutions, as mobile device management and BYOD become common practice.
