The VAR Guy is suffering from a case of virtualization deja vu. Or is it double-vision? The symptoms: VMware today launched the VMware Solution Exchange, a virtualization and cloud solutions marketplace. It’s designed to help customers, partners and developers to more easily find and select VMware-certified solutions. Now, the twist…

The VMware Solution Exchange launched roughly one week after Red Hat launched its own marketplace for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 (RHEV 3.0) solutions. So, is VMware playing catch-up against Red Hat? Certainly not. VMware’s latest financial results reinforce the company’s leadership position in the virtualization market. The VMware Solution Exchange strives to further accelerate VMware’s momentum.

Meanwhile, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization is a relative upstart in the virtualization market. It’s gaining momentum but has not disrupted VMware’s business in a noticeable way.

The evidence: VMware claims its partner community includes more than 2,000 companies that have built more than 3,500 applications and 6,000 infrastructure products for VMware’s platforms. In theory, the Solution Exchange will allow customers and additional partners to more quickly find those VMware-certified products.

It’s a safe bet VMware will unveil more Solution Exchange members during the VMware Partner Exchange 2012 (Feb. 13-16, Las Vegas) — one of the Top 100 Channel Partner Conferences that The VAR Guy is tracking this year.

  1. Gary Green Says:

I’m the virtualization alliance manager for my company and I work with both RedHat and vmware. I’ve been working with vmware for months and months to make sure that the content in our product listings are correct and had only been recently (within the last month or so) been contacted by RedHat to list in their “new” catalog. We’ve not even bothered listing our products there yet, and it seems that nobody else has either if you look at it. It is my opinion that someone leaked the release date of vmware’s site and RedHat jumped the gun on their release to try to “beat” vmware (not the first time we’ve seen something like that).. they should have concentrated on their content instead of trying to cross the finish line first..

  2. Johnny White Says:

I doubt anyone is “following” VmWare….

remember giving away ESX? Only did that in response to Xen.

Seen their raw performance numbers lately…playing catchup to the others

Paid for any of their features?…way higher than anyone else…unless you hope the others catch up to their lead on price!

Gary Green@1: Thanks for providing the partner perspective. The VAR Guy also wondered if Red Hat was trying to “beat” VMware’s marketplace launch date…

Johnny White@2: The VAR Guy suspects RHEV will gain momentum over time but VMware shows no signs of slowing down…

@Johnny good point on the esxi free, but I can tell you that I work with both products, most of our work is with integration rather than just implementation and even though the tech rebel in me always tries to fight against the grain I find myself always going back to vmware for functionality and stability. Fact of the matter is that no matter how hard you try, the only example anyone ever gives me of vmware playing any kind of catch up is their making the esxi free..

  5. Sean Bennett Says:

Red Hat and vmWare seem to be going back and forth when it comes to introducing the most up to date products in the marketplace. This is a great perspective into the different products’ of each company. I wonder how Red Hat will react with VMware’s launch of the vCenter?
